UWV can help you if you want to work in the Netherlands

The UWV is the Employee Insurance Agency in the Netherlands. Below you will find information on how the UWV can assist you in looking for work in the Netherlands, how to register as a job seeker in the country and the arrangements you should make if you receive benefits from another country, or if you would like to receive benefits in the Netherlands.

Looking for vacancies on werk.nl

Do you not yet live in the Netherlands? Then you can look for vacancies on werk.nl, a website hosted by UWV. UWV also recommends a number of different websites and other ways in which you can find a job.

Publishing your CV on werk.nl

If you already live in the Netherlands and if you are registered as a resident of your municipality, you can use the online services provided by UWV. On werk.nl, you can log in to your own Werkmap, an online environment that relates to your job search. In your Werkmap, you can:

  • publish your CV on werk.nl, and therefore officially register as a job seeker in the Netherlands

  • browse jobs and respond immediately

  • find vacancies that relate to your CV

How do I log in to my Werkmap?

You will need a DigiD (a user name and password with which you can log in to government websites) in order to be able to log in to your Werkmap. For more information about how to apply for a DigiD, read 'How can I Apply for a DigiD' at the end of this page.

Once you have a DigiD, you can log in to your Werkmap as follows:

  1. Click the black bar at the top right hand side of the screen which says ‘Log in met DigiD’.

  2. Enter your user name in the search box next to ‘Gebruikersnaam’.

  3. Enter your password in the search box next to ‘Wachtwoord’.

  4. Click the ‘Inloggen’ button to login.

Present your CV on the EURES website

This option is especially recommended if you want to work in the Netherlands, but still live in another country. EURES (EURopean Employment Services) is a network collaborating with UWV, employment agencies, unions and employer organisations within Europe (EU, EEA, Switzerland). EURES is coordinated by the European Commission.

You can use the EURES website to:

  • Create an online CV and make it available to registered employers as well as to EURES advisers that help employers find suitable candidates. You can create your CV in the section ‘My EURES’.

  • obtain information about living and working in the Netherlands.

  • respond to vacancies in the Netherlands.

  • contact a EURES adviser if you have any questions about living or working in the Netherlands.

  • Contact other networks for advice and information on working in the Netherlands: ec.europa.eu/contact-points/index.jsp.

You can follow EURES on Facebook and Twitter.

EURES has developed an online game for young people offering an opportunity to discover Europe.

Registering as a job seeker in the Netherlands

If you are looking for work in the Netherlands, you are expected to do this yourself. If you would like to register officially as a job seeker in the Netherlands, it is enough to place your CV on werk.nl. This will increase your chances of finding work. You are not required to register, except if your benefits agency expects you to do so.

Registering with the UWV if you receive benefits from another country (PD U2)

If you are currently receiving unemployment benefits from abroad and staying in the Netherlands to find work, you must register with the UWV as a job seeker so that the UWV can inform your benefits agency that you are looking for work in the Netherlands. You must register at an UWV office. Please call to make an appointment:

  • UWV telephone number: +31 88 898 20 01, available from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Take the following with you to your appointment at the UWV:

  • Your CSN (Citizen Service Number).

  • Your PD U2 form. You can request this form at the agency you receive benefits from. The UWV needs this form in order to inform your benefits agency that you are looking for work in the Netherlands. If you do not receive this form from your benefits agency in time for your appointment with the UWV, you may send it at a later date.

How can I apply for a DigiD?

DigiD stands for Digital Identity and comprises a username and password that you yourself choose. Your DigiD enables you to identify yourself on Dutch government websites such as werk.nl.

Apply for your DigiD at: digid.nl. You will need your 'Burger Servicenummer' (BSN - Citizen Service Number) for this. If you don’t have one, please read 'How can I Apply for a BSN' at the end of this page.

After you have applied for a DigiD, you will receive a letter with details on how to activate your DigiD. Once you have done this, you will be able to log in.

How do I apply for BSN?

Your Burger Servicenummer is a unique personal number that you receive when you register in the Municipal Personal Records Database ('GBA' in Dutch) in the town or city you live in. You will need valid proof of identification to register in the GBA.

Are you not, or not yet, officially resident in the Netherlands? Then register in one of these municipalities (pdf, 16 kB).
